An output procedure is a procedure that processes the data in a sort work file after the file has been sorted. 

If you don’t need to process the sorted records, you can code a Giving clause instead of an output procedure. Then, the COBOL program automatically retrieves the sorted records, opens the output file, writes the sorted records to that file, and closes the file.
